  3. Bug fixes
  4. Latency in serial port sound input device drivers was causing a reentrancy problem in NetPhone. We now hang off the interrupt procedure, and NetPhone no longer locks up on slow (68030) Macs using serial port sound input devices.

  9. Feature changes
  10. 16-bit audio support. The GSM, Intel DVI and ｵ-Law audio encodings all support sample sizes larger than 8 bits. NetPhone can now take advantage of the extra fidelity these formats provide. Machines with 16-bit audio hardware will transmit and receive slightly higher quality audio. Machines with 8-bit audio hardware will perform as before.

Auto Squelch. When Auto Squelch in the NetPhone menu is checked, NetPhone automatically tracks the ambient noise level, and sends audio only when you are speaking. Auto squelch works best in quieter environments when speech is more easily distinguished from background nose. When Auto Squelch is not checked, you can set the squelch level manually as before (see page 6 of the manual).

  14. Push to Talk. If NetPhone is run on a Macintosh with half-duplex audio hardware, "Push To Talk" is switched on automatically.

  16. SLIP/PPP detection. When using a SLIP or PPP connection, NetPhone ensures that lower bandwidth encodings are used when "Use Best Encoding" is selected in a call window.

  18. Microphone Button. The icon on the microphone button now indicates which audio source is in use. The previous icon looked too much like a bomb and confused people.

  20. Bug fixes
  21. "Future Packets". Some machines would never play incoming audio, displaying all the packets in the future. This is fixed.

  23. Garbled Audio. Occasionally, when an extremely high jitter was detected, incoming audio would overflow a buffer causing garbled sound playback. This is fixed.

  25. Open Transport Support. NetPhone will now run on machines using Open Transport.

  27. Stability. There were several rare error conditions that could cause NetPhone to crash. These have been fixed.

  29. DC Bias Compensation. Many Macintosh microphone sockets add a DC bias to the incoming audio signal, causing an annoying background hum with CVSD encoding, and reducing the dynamic range of other encodings. NetPhone now tracks and compensates for this DC bias.

  32. Sound Manager 3.0. NetPhone now requires that Sound Manager 3.0 be available. Sound Manager 3.0 is a built-in component of System Software 7.5 and later, and is available as an extension for System Software 7.1. It can be downloaded from the support section on Electric Magic's WWW site at http://www.emagic.com/support/
